Galera
Galera is one of the most beautiful villages in Granada Province and has a history that goes back over 4,000 years. The village has a population of around 1,300, is situated in the Altiplano or High Planes and is seven kilometers from the town of Huescar. The Altiplano is the bed of an ancient lake that dried out many thousands of years ago, as such the Altiplano is surrounded by mountain ranges reaching nearly 2,500m above sea level.
The most prominent mountain is "Sagra", with an elevation of 2,381m above sea level and is the second highest in the province of Granada only being beaten by the Sierra Nevadas. The area surrounding Sagra is of great natural beauty, and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. On the north side of the mountain there is an astronomical observatory which discovered a small asteroid so named 164589 La Sagra. It is a great areas to explore both in summer and winter either by car, cycle or foot.
Locally there are four natural parks of oustanding beauty, these are the Sierra Castril, Sierra Baza, Sierra Maria and Cazorla.
The landscape immediately surrouding Galera is quite spectacular including fertile valleys, pine covered mountain areas and semi arid 'badlands', all of which are perfect for walking and cycling and many more outdoor sports..
Galera is around 150 km from the historic city of Granada with its famous Alhambra Palace and the Sierra Nevada ski resort. About the same distance to the west are the new Murcia airport, to be finalised this year, and the exciting Paramount Theme park, now in its final planning stages.
Cave Houses
Cave houses are probably very different from what you imagine. Today's cave houses are not the primitive homes of times gone by. A modern cave house can be anything from a cosy country cottage to a cave house hotel.
The modernised cave house is fitted with all the conveniences we have come to expect including mains electicity, water and sewerage. Telephone and broadband are also available via landline and or satellite.
Cave houses have been carved out of the rocks of Andalusia since the Moorish invasion. For the last few centuries, right up to the 1960s, tens of thousands of cave houses gave shelter to farm workers, their families and their livestock. In the late sixties, with the mechanisation of farming and the advent of mass coastal tourism the local population saw a drastic decline and many a cave house was abandoned. Happily, today, that decline is being reversed and they are being restored to a glory never seen before.
Cave houses are eco friendly and very economic to buy, run and maintain.
