Galera is an unspoilt and very pretty village that is approximately 850m above sea level and has a population of just over 1300. It is a village steeped in history that goes back approximately 4,000 years and there is an archaeological dig site in Galera and a local museum for those interested in the history of the area.
The town has all the basic amenities with a local supermarket, banks, butchers, bakers, doctors surgery, primary school, and small weekly market. There is an outdoor swimming pool which is open during the months of July and August. The town is surrounded by lovely countryside that is perfect for walking and cycling and many more outdoor sports and is close to 5 national parks - Sierra de Baza, Sierra de Castril, Sierra de Cazorla, Sierra de Huétor and Sierra de Sagra. The scenery can be very contrasting, lush and green in some areas, and dry and arid in others. Due to the lack of pollution in the area it is perfect for artists and photographers.
It is approximately 136km from Granada (1.5 hour's drive) and this is the nearest international airport offering flights with both Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) and Monarch Airlines (www.flymonarch.com). The area is also served by Almeria, Murcia, Alicante and Malaga airports which are approximately 2 hours drive from Galera. It is approximately 160km (2 hour's drive) from the nearest coast of Mojacar in Almeria.

Thank you for another lovely stay in Galera.

Thank you Les and Sharon.
The cave is perfect - we absolutely love it, and have had an excellent week exploring the area and spending time with Sue and Steve.
We've cycled through the 'Badlands' and touched the snow on La Sagra. Had a wonderful BBQ on the terrace and walked the planks and rope bridge at Castril.
Thanks so much for the provisions you left for us and the wonderful time we have had here. Much appreciated, a very homely place.
Cathay and Steph 25/04/09
We have spent a really special time here on this our second visit. It has been a very memorable Easter watching and taking part in local processions, in both Galera and Baza. We have had a chance to visit a great variety of cave houses and so make us certain of what we are really looking for. Thank you again for your hospitality and friendly help.
