Castillejar
Castilléjar is a small village, with around 1600 inhabitants known as Castillejaranos. It is situated in a lovely area know as the Altiplano or High Planes and is at an altitude of 766 m above sea level. It forms one of the six villages that make up the region of Huescar, which lies in the north eastern corner of the Povince of Granada. Huescar lies about 15km to the north.
The village lies around 15 km north of Baza and the main A92 dual carriageway that runs between the cities of Granada and Murcia, both of which are about 150km distance.
The Aliplano region is one of the prettiest and least spoiled areas in Andalusia and Castillejar lies between the two rivers of Guardal and Barbatas.
Within easy driving distance are the Natural Parks of the Sierra Castril, Cazorla, Baza and Maria. Also there are the four lakes, Castril, Negratin, San Clemente and La Bolera which make Castillejar an ideal centre for exploring this beautiful area.
Along with the other villages of the Altiplano, Castillejar is famous for its cave houses, which nowadays have all modern conveniences you might expect in a conventional house. They also have the distinct advantages in that they are considerably cheaper both to buy and run. Cave houses maintain a much more even temperature through the seasons and do not require air conditioning in the summer, however they do require some form of heating in the winter.
The area offers plenty of outdoor activities i.e. walking, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, horse riding, canoeing and, fishing, etc. The surrounding countryside offers great contrasts from the Badlands (semi desert areas) to the lush river valleys, great for photography and painting.
History
Castillejar has been occupied since prehistoric times the first signs of occupation being the Caves of Guardal. Traces of an Iberian village have been found. It was also occupied by the Arabs when it was know as Moreria and was taken back by the Catholics in 1488.
Food
There are a number of restaurants and bars in the area with some local specialities such as lata al horno, which is the regions equivalent of a roast dinner. The area is also famous for its pastries.
